Put on the Armor of God

per

Ephesians

Ephesians 6:13

Wherefore take unto you the whole Armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

The bible in First Peter 5:8 tells us to be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. That he is a thief that comes to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10)

But exactly how are we supposed to be mindful and protect ourselves? Especially against an unforeseen force that is operating in the spiritual realm? It feels like we sometimes are swinging helplessly in the dark at an enemy we cannot see?

Well the bible has a solution for us. Its the full Armor of God. But how do we put on the full Armor of God? Is it just mere words we recite? And then believe through the power of prayer we have on this spiritual armor or is it something more?

1. Ephesians 6:14 “put on the full Armor of God, having your loins girt with truth”.

Girted loins in scripture represent a sign for readiness for service. So having your loins girted with truth means you are ready to serve others in God with the truth. Jesus is called ‘the truth, the light, and the way’ (John 14:6) so therefore if you reread this passage...it means to be ready to serve others in Jesus Christ. A man whose strength is in the attachment to the truth in other words is faithful, is spoken of as having his loins girt about with truth. In previous generations, it was a deep sign of respect and honor when men shook hands giving their word on a matter. As the world falls further and further into darkness, this has become non existent.

2. “Have on the breastplate of righteousness”.

What do breastplates do? Well if we read back through scripture we see in Exodus 28:28 that the breastplate reminded priests of his representative character. What is righteousness? Jesus presents righteousness as the conformity to the will of God. God’s people are righteous when they are in right relationship with him. So when we put on the breastplate of righteousness we are representing our character to stand fast in our right relationship with God the Father. Guarding our hearts from evil.

3. “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15).

The word shod means the past tense for wearing foot wear. Feet are to the body what our free will is to the soul. If you do not have the word of God hidden in your heart to stand against the enemy. You are not prepared when he comes to still, kill, and destroy; which in effect, robs you of your peace. You cant tread on snakes and scorpions like scripture commands you to in Luke 10:19, without the word of God hidden in your heart- because you are barefoot. A very good example of this is in the book of Matthew. Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days. Now him being a man of flesh meant he was probably very weak and very hungry at the end of this fast. Satan came to tempt him with all the he could. What did Jesus do? He said, “it is written”. Jesus himself used the word of God hidden in his heart against the devil.

4. “Above all, taking the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:16).

What is Faith? Well per Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. So how do we take this shield? And why is a shield even associated with faith? A shield guards. While a physical shield protects us physically, faith can protect our spiritual lives through trials. A shield deflects. Satan is always hurling his fiery darts of fear, doubt, and worry in our direction. But the only time they can hit us is when we let our shield of faith down. When we stop believing that God is in control, that is he is working everything out for our good, that whatever happens is for the ultimate best for everyone involved, however little it seems to be that way.

5.  “And take the helmet of salvation & the sword of the spirit- which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). A helmet protects a soldier against damaging and deadly blows to the head. Spiritually speaking, the helmet of salvation provides hope and protects the mind against anything that would destroy the Christian because the battlefield for the soul is in the mind. This helmet protects the mind. The eyes and the ears are the windows to the soul. We therefor cover the eye gates and ear gates from the demonic. We don’t watch porn. We don’t listen to nasty rap music. We don’t listen to gossip and slander or dirty jokes or watch bad movies/video games.

6. “We carry the sword of the Spirit”

Hebrews 4:12 tells us the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even into dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. So how do we slay the kingdom of darkness? With the sword of the spirit. So here is an example- lets say I am depressed, satan comes along as whispers into my ear, you are ugly, you are fat, no one likes you. Really satan? God told me in Psalms 139:14 I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am the head and not the tail (Duet 28:13). I am the child of the most high God (John 1:12). I am a friend of Jesus (John 15:15). I have been justified and redeemed (Romans 3:24). I am a new creation in Christ (2 Cor 5:17). I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). So who is the loser now? Get behind thee satan.

7. And finally...”Praying always with all prayers and supplications in the spirit” (Ephesians 6:18).

Thank You Almighty God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the Supreme Authority of the Universe (Genesis 1). We thank you for blessing us with your grace and your mercy. We put on the full Armor of God per Ephesians. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the enemy, we shod our feet with the quickness and readiness of the gospel, we put on the helmet of hope and salvation and carry the sword of the spirit. Thank you Father for encapsulating us in the fire of the Holy Spirit. We soak our Armor in the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth above and below our Armor. We thank you for guarding us with warring Angels to fight our battles in the Heavenlies. In your mighty glorious son’s name Jesus Christ we agree on these things. Amen & Amen.
