Codependency

Codependency is a false idol.

When we put others or things before loving God we create a dependency on those people or things to provide us what only God can continuously provide us. This attachment turns into painful grief when the temporal people and things of this world cannot continue to sustain us. Everything in this world is temporary. Including love from others. This is the lesson that death, betrayal, rejection and a broken heart has taught me as I have gone through the painful grief and forgiveness process multiple times. Understanding this set me free. I cannot love anything more than I love God.

If you read Ezekiel 14

Ezekiel says that some of the elders came to him to inquire of God because Ezekiel was a prophet. And God told Ezekiel that these men had set up idols in their hearts and put before them self stumbling blocks into iniquity. Idols that were not apparent from the outside. These idols were not evident outwardly. This secret idolatry made them to stumble into iniquity. Iniquity is a premeditated choice to sin. But God told Ezekiel that he is under no obligation to listen to the inquiries that these elders had to God. Basically the elder’s prayers fell on God’s deaf ears. Because of the elder’s idols they were estranged from God. This verse is important for those who come to Scripture seeking guidance. No true direction can be given to those who have erected idols in their hearts. So God told Ezekiel to tell these elders to repent, to turn away from the false idols, and turn away from their abominations. And that if they did not do so God promised to oppose such double-hearted men. God knows the truth about those who pretend to serve God on the outside but are filled with idolatry on the inside, and He would oppose them and judge them according to that truth. And that judgement would be harsh discipline.

What are you idol-ing in codependency?

Is your idol love itself? (The iniquity would be lust) Is it a lost love? (The iniquity would be obsession) Is it security through money? (The iniquity would be greed) Is it control to feel safe? (The iniquity would be manipulation or witchcraft). Have you made yourself an idol?(ask Satan how that worked out for him) What are you putting above loving God first? Anything in this world you cant give up is an idol. God is not opposed to you having stuff as long as the stuff doesn’t have you.

Per Job 22:28

I shall declare and decree a thing and it shall be established unto me.

I declare and decree that I love the Lord my God with all my heart, with all my mind and with all my soul. I put no god (idol) before him.

God says he is a jealous God and that we may not put any gods before him.

God has highly exalted Jesus and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

To Christ, Satan must bow.

'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.' Romans 14:11
